Canadian Filmmaker Torin Langen Starts Analog Distro LOVECHILD PICTURES, Set to Release the James Felix McKenney Sci-fi Flick AUTOMATONS on Limited Edition VHS in Conjunction with Glass Eye Pix!
Torin Langen is a name you may recognize from his low-budget (but high-quality) production company Candle Flame Films and the spooktacular short film Fondue. His affinity for analog has been previously evidenced by some radical limited edition VHS released through Candle Flame, including the SOV throwback horror short Trash. Langen has now reignited his analog inclination, this time with the start of the Limited Edition VHS distribution banner LOVECHILD PICTURES, which is set to release the James Felix McKenney black and white, dystopian sci-fi film Automatons in a limited edition of 50. Here’s Torin with more details on the start of LOVECHILD PICTURES:
“LOVECHILD is going to specialize in artisanal VHS releases of directors' early works, as well as nitty-gritty productions close to their filmmaker parents' hearts. And guess what? The first tape is almost ready! … Check out the Lovechild Pictures page to keep up to date on the release. I've just gotten it up and running so new content will be added soon. And for those of attending New York Comic Con, Glass Eye Pix will have 20 of the 50 copies up for sale!”
A look at the mock for the Limited Edition LOVECHILD PICTURES VHS for AUTOMATONS. Each edition comes signed and hand-numbered. Dig that, mang.
That’s right, Tapeheads: if you’ll be attending the upcoming New York Comic Con on October 8th – 11th, you’ll get first crack at sticking this fresh slab of low-budget, stunning sci-fi in your VCR. Here’s more details on the release, including the online availability, direct from the Glass Eye Pix press release: “Newly established niche distribution label Lovechild Pictures is proud to announce its first in a series of artisanal VHS releases; James Felix McKenney’s dystopian sci-fi opus, AUTOMATONS. Set in the distant future following an all-out robot genocide, AUTOMATONS follows a lone female survivor, sparring on against all odds with the aid of her mechanical companions. Lensed in gritty black & white Super 8mm, Lovechild Pictures’ analog presentation enhances the experience of this nostalgia-inspired horror epic, best described as ROBOT MONSTER meets ERASERHEAD. Produced by Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix and McKenney’s MonsterPants Movies, AUTOMATONS stars newcomer Christine Spencer (SATAN HATES YOU), Brenda Cooney (I SELL THE DEAD) and genre icon Angus Scrimm (the PHANTASM series). Also featured are Don Wood (COLONIAL HOUSE, HYPOTHERMIA), John Anthony Blake (DOCTOR WHO, PSYCHOMANIA) and Executive Producer Larry Fessenden (HABIT, THE LAST WINTER). Packed to the brim with bonus content and an original making-of interview zine with director James Felix McKenney, Lovechild Pictures’ AUTOMATONS tape will be available for online purchase October 15th, signed and limited to 50 copies. NYC Comic Con attendees receive an advance opportunity to grab a copy at the Glass Eye Pix booth, where 20 of the tapes will be for sale, limited to one per customer.” Even if you can’t make it to NYCC, there’s still a fightin’ chance that you’ll be able to grab this lovely limited edition VHS if you mark your magnetic magic calendars for October 15th, and stay tuned to the Official Lovechild Pictures Facebook! If you haven't seen Automatons, be sure to peep the trailer. You’ll be glad ya did, Tapeheads!Groove and Groove and Rewind Robots 5EVA.
