Crafted in 2005 by David Herbert, here is an amazing (and huge!) sculpture entitled Monolith, which recreates the cassette for the MGM / UA video release of Kubrick’s classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. What an extremely appropriate title for this piece, right?   Made using foam, plexiglass and latex paint, this bad boy measures a whopping 2x4x8 feet! Imagine this thing your living room! What a conversation starter! The attention to detail is outstanding, and the fact that he hand painted all of the lettering on the front of the cassette is too cool.   One thing I did...

Gimmicks encourage sales. That’s a solid fact when it comes to marketing. And VHS video releases were no exception as they employed everything from 3D covers with light up eyes (Imperial Entertainment’s The Dead Pit and Metamorphosis), talking boxes (Shapiro - Glickenhaus’ Frankenhooker), and of course, that natural allure of the almighty big box (see Lunchmeat issue #4 for my write-up on these and a slew of other gimmicky vids!). I think it is safe to say, however, that everyone has their personal favorite that they claim as their own....

It all started two years ago . . . I was visiting family in the great state of Oregon and the local Mom & Pop video store closed. They were selling off all of their DVDs and VHS tapes. Even though I was out of work and money was an issue, I couldn’t help myself. I stepped in the door, died, and found VHS heaven! I had no idea they had so many cool flicks! Of course they didn’t . . . See there’s a company based in Vancouver, WA called Movie Movers. They have two stores in Vancouver and...

Recent events on eBay have solidified the notion that VHS fandom and collecting have been kicked up to an entirely new level. For the past few years, prices of tapes have been sending shocks and awes throughout the VHS collector community, undoubtedly inspiring grunts of chagrin and disbelief to some of the avid aficionados of video. Tapes such as The People Who Own the Dark, Last House on Dead End Street,(both on the Sun Video label), Screams of a Winter Night, Snuff and a slew of other obscure gems demand sums that boggle one’s mind, consistently passing the $100 mark...
