“Watch What You Want When You Want” Home Video Slogan and Icon Was Created by the VSDA [Video Software Dealers Association]

When video revolutionized home entertainment in the 80s and 90s, the message and mission was clear: Watch What You Want When You Want.

Today in Lunchmeat Land we’re going to examine and explore the origin of this official slogan and ephemeral icon, created by the Video Software Dealers Association.

The VSDA was an entity founded in 1981, created to support independent video distribution and rental rights. They’re a huge part of home video history, and I do encourage you to look more at what they did.

I had seen this WWYWWYW icon printed on All Seasons Entertainment releases, and I recently noticed it again on this Forum Home Video copy of Bloodstone

It wasn't until a colleague of mine (thank you to Tyler Bell) recently sent me this stationary sheet for VSDA meetings across the country, that I realized this icon and slogan was directly connected to the VSDA.

The ”Watch What You Want When You Want” slogan and emblem origin had suddenly become clear, proof positive with a simple piece of paper. But why does ASE and Forum carry the insignia, while other companies don't? Should we just call the number on this piece of paper and ask 'em? If only....

Collecting pieces of the video era puzzle and sticking them together is a big part of what makes us tick, and we're glad you’re here along with us on this seemingly endless adventure through the interesting obscurities of home video history.

Always Watch What You Want, When You Want and remember to Rewind... OR DIE!
