Bay Area artist Bonnie Banks has been a prominent figure in the underground West Coast noise music scene since the early '80s and a VHS collector for life. The Brutal Sound Effects and Godwaffle Noise Pancakes founder – also a musician with Commode Minstrels in Bull Face and a collaborating creative with acts like Rubber (() Cement, Spider Compass Good Crime Band, Hans Grüsel's Krankenkabinet, and Scummerai – is a passionate voice in the VHS community, espousing views that evoke something far more revolutionary than mere obsession or nostalgia. Just a couple of days ago, I did a post about the Demon Queen tape that fetched nearly $800 on eBay, which is unsurprisingly getting a ton of attention. In closing that piece, I encouraged all the Videovores out there to scour the depths of any & all flea markets, dirt malls, second-hand shops and any place that bares the word “video” on its signage. I am such a horror nerd. Last year to commemorate their 300th issue, Fangoria put out a list of 300 lesser seen horror flicks for the serious fan. I have seen all of ‘em except two. I’ve spent the last ten years watching every “classic” horror flick as well as whatever all the new flicks that have come out. Recently though I’ve become burnt out on the genre. Let me start by saying that I have promoted, performed, & hosted many a music event in my day – too many to even try to count. Before joining Lunchmeat, I toured the underground hip-hop circuit and it took me all over the world; I’ve been DJ’ing in a crew with friends since I was 15 years old & alongside some really great artists – I even opened for some amazing bands, like glassJaw at Brixton Academy in London, in front of 5,000+ screaming fans one awesome evening back in 2007. I spent most of my younger years religiously attending...

Interview by Josh Schafer (7.19.11) Earl Kessler sure is one voracious Videovore. He eats, sleeps, breathes and (of course) watches VHS every day of his life. His fervor for the format, while extreme in comparison to most, isn’t becoming more of rarity these days; quite the opposite - it seems that more and more people are entering the fold, getting chewed up by the collector bug and grabbing every tape they can, by all means necessary. What does this mean for the average tape collector? Does it mean tapes are going to be harder to come by? Yes. Does it...
